BMW X3 Diesel: The new X3 is very important for BMW and is selling very well not only in India but also worldwide. Positioned below the X5 and above the X1, the X3 fits nicely in the middle of these SUVs and is a SUV that appeals to the right size buyers here in the Indian market. The new X3 looks completely different and much more attractive than the previous generation. It is not like a shrunken X5 and has its own identity. The clean, monolithic lines are distinct, but the pointed headlamps along with the big BMW grille also add to its presence.

It is also 4,755 mm long and 1,920 mm wide. The way the roofline is flat and the rear design is also quite unique, with wide tail-lamps that further enhance its wide feel. The M Sport package also gets good-looking 19-inch wheels as standard.

What about the interior?

The interior is very futuristic and completely different from the previous version. Stepping inside you will see a late curved display similar to the new 5 Series, also there are not too many physical controls, which means you will have to use the touchscreen more for many functions. Also on closer inspection you will find vent controls with haptic sliders for fan speed, also the way it is designed is very sci-fi. The door pads and dash are also in this interesting textile like fabric weave, which doesn't have the usual soft touch luxury feel that you would expect, but it is different.

 BMW has used durable materials

There is also an interaction bar, a vibrant crystal knob and some physical controls. BMW has used durable materials to make the seats plush as well as powered and ventilated. The feature list is huge with a panoramic glass roof, 4-zone climate control, sports seats, Harman Kardon surround sound system with 15 speakers, head-up display and more.

Improved Seating Position & Comfort

In terms of legroom, space is more or less the same as before, but the seating position and comfort have been improved and you sit higher, plus there is a sunblind and touch controls at the rear as well as a recline option. Storage space is also quite good. Although BMW has made the cabin quite technical and cool, it is not as luxurious as the 3-Series.

How does it work?

There are two twin turbo four cylinder petrol and diesel with mild hybrid technology while the diesel is more powerful at 197 hp and 400Nm with a boost function as well. Standard is an 8-speed automatic and AWD along with adaptive suspension. The driving position is pure BMW as you sit low with a thick sports steering wheel. At low speeds, the diesel is now quieter and the ride has improved while some low speed firmness is still there but it is now more balanced.

Ride could have been improved a bit

On the move, the diesel has a strong surge with plenty of torque while the gearbox has also been tuned to be aggressive. This sporty SUV is also a proper BMW with agile handling and more focus on driving pleasure. The steering is direct and feels more fun to drive with performance being given priority but the ride could have been improved a bit.

 Is it worth buying?

The diesel is more expensive at Rs 77.8 lakh but the performance is better than the petrol with torque and efficiency, although we haven't driven the petrol X3 yet. Where the X3 scores high is in looks, futuristic cabin and a slightly more comfortable drive and better refinement. It is a more desirable car than the previous X3 and is still the most fun luxury SUV with performance as the priority.
